Shooting Suspect in Abe Shinzo Case: Planned to Shoot Indoors, Loaded Gun with Live Rounds the Day Before

Reported 12 months ago

According to a report by the Japanese newspaper 'Mainichi Shimbun' on July 3, 2024, the suspect, Yamagami Toharu, who is accused of shooting former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, confessed that he had prepared to shoot Abe indoors while he was giving a speech the day before the incident, having already loaded the gun with bullets. Yamagami initially planned to shoot Abe during a speech at a venue in Okayama City, but due to the large number of people and tight security, he couldn't get close enough, leading him to abandon the plan. He later shot Abe while approaching him from behind at a distance of 5 to 7 meters in Nara. Yamagami cited dissatisfaction with a cult to which his mother belonged, with Abe's alleged connections to the group being a motive for the attack.
