Shortage of Physical Therapists in Long-term Care

Reported about 1 year ago

Since the Physical Therapist Act took effect in January 2023, the number of physical therapists in Taiwan has reached 8,532, with more than 80% working in hospitals or clinics. However, those in social welfare and long-term care institutions face difficulties due to low salaries and high workloads. Many therapists opt to open their own practices, offering higher hourly wages ranging from NT$1,500 to NT$3,400, compared to the average monthly salary of NT$35,000 in social welfare institutions. The shortage is evident in Taiwan, with only one physical therapist for every 2703 people, necessitating the government to actively cultivate more professionals for healthy aging in the face of an aging society.
