Taiwanese actress Shu Qi has become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, qualifying her as an Oscars jury member. This honor makes Shu Qi the third Chinese female actress, after Gong Li and Maggie Cheung, to have judging qualifications at the Berlin, Cannes, Venice, and Oscars film festivals. A total of 487 new members were added by the Academy this year, including talents like Jessica Chastain, Lily James, Yakusho Koji, Kang Dong-won, Lee Byung-hun, and Rita Hsieh. The addition of Asian artists to the Academy's roster highlights the importance and influence of Asian cinema on the global stage. Shu Qi's appointment as an Oscars jury member marks another significant milestone in her career, having previously served as a judge at the Berlin and Cannes film festivals and being the first Taiwanese female star to have all three European film festival jury qualifications.
