Singer's Mention of Tiananmen Incident at Golden Melody Awards Leads to Decreased Popularity in China

Reported 12 months ago

At the 35th Golden Melody Awards, singer Baine received the Best Taiwanese Album Award and mentioned the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Incident during her acceptance speech. This caused her songs and discussions to disappear in China. Deputy Minister Liang Wen-chieh of the Mainland Affairs Council commented that mainland Chinese singers are scared when they hear 'Tiananmen' and may voluntarily avoid coming to Taiwan. He emphasized that while Taiwan welcomes mainland artists and athletes, the display of national flags by Taiwanese audiences during sports events sometimes makes mainland teams uncomfortable and may lead them to avoid coming to Taiwan.
