The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) released its annual report estimating China's nuclear warhead arsenal has increased from 410 in January 2023 to 500 in January 2024, with projections for further expansion. Although China's arsenal is smaller than the US and Russia, SIPRI predicts China could surpass them in intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) over the next decade. The report highlights ongoing modernization efforts by the nine nuclear-armed countries and expresses concerns over the global trend of increasing nuclear weapons, with the US and Russia holding the majority.
