SoftBank is in discussions to invest between $15 billion to $25 billion in OpenAI, owner of ChatGPT, as part of its strategy to strengthen its position in the AI industry. This investment may contribute to the Stargate joint venture, which targets a $500 billion investment aimed at keeping the U.S. competitive in the global AI race. Despite previous declines in its stock, SoftBank's board is reportedly supportive of this move following an earlier $1.5 billion investment in OpenAI, which is valued at $157 billion.
