Solving Bus Driver Shortage: Su Jun-bin Hopes Taoyuan's 'Train-then-Employ' Program will Expand Nationally

Reported about 1 year ago

During the Cabinet meeting today, the Ministry of Transportation proposed the 'Sustainable Public Transport and Transportation Equity Plan,' with strategies such as public transport recovery, aiming to invest 20 billion NT dollars starting from 2025 in collaboration with local governments. Taoyuan Deputy Mayor Su Jun-bin shared the success of Taoyuan's pioneering bus driver 'Train-then-Employ' program, recruiting 75 individuals, and urged central support for counties to cultivate bus drivers at the source to fundamentally solve the driver shortage issue. Premier Cho Jung-tai acknowledged the proposal and instructed the Ministry of Transportation to consider expanding the program. Su hopes this strategic support will enhance the bus transport stability and service quality locally, and prevent inter-county competition over drivers. The program has already trained 34 individuals, with an additional 100 expected to become formal drivers by year-end.
