Following Panasonic, Sony is planning to exit the disc market in 2024 and downsize its workforce. Manufacturers of discs state that the consumer disc market has been shrinking annually, with brand factories outsourcing production, resulting in limited impact on them. Sony is in talks with suppliers and distributors about the possibility of halting sales completely in the latter half of the year. The shift towards cloud storage has led to continuous disc demand decline and prolonged poor performance. Sony is ceasing disc development, gradually stopping production, and laying off about 40% of the department's employees. Despite Sony's withdrawal, Taiwan's disc industry confirms that the decline in the overall sales volume will be inevitable, as the market has been steadily outsourcing to Taiwanese disc manufacturers in recent years.
