As tensions in the South China Sea escalate, a commercial satellite recently captured the People's Liberation Army Navy aircraft carrier 'Shandong' appearing about 200 nautical miles (approximately 360 kilometers) off the coast of Luzon, Philippines. Foreign media analyzed this move as having a deterrent meaning. Mainland military experts stated that this is 'normal training' to defend sovereignty and maritime interests. The 'Shandong' carrier has been conducting routine training in various sea areas since the end of 2019 and its recent presence in the South China Sea is part of regular exercises.
