South Korea saw a record high of over 20,000 people involved in drug-related crimes last year, with a notable increase in youth and female offenders as well as a rise in drug addiction and recidivism, posing societal challenges. To address this, starting July 10, drug testing will be added to the health checkups for new recruits, and active-duty soldiers will undergo drug tests from August. The trend of increasing drug-related crimes among the youth and women, as well as harsher penalties, facing the issue were highlighted in the 2023 Drug-Related Crime White Paper released by the South Korea Prosecutors' Office.
