South Korea's well-known e-commerce platform Coupang was heavily fined by the country's Fair Trade Commission with a penalty of 33 billion KRW on June 13, 2024. The government found that Coupang used unfair search mechanisms and algorithms, uploaded fake product reviews to mislead consumers, and boosted exposure and sales of its own brands. They also discovered that 2297 Coupang employees were mobilized to write positive reviews for their own brand products. The platform's bias in favoring its own brands hindered fair competition and consumer choices, violating the Fair Trade Act.
