A lithium battery factory in Hwaseong city, specialized in manufacturing batteries for sensors and wireless communication devices, caught fire and burned for approximately 6 hours before being extinguished. The initial cause was believed to be a warehouse storing around 35,000 batteries that exploded. Most of the deceased were foreign workers, primarily Chinese nationals, who were likely unfamiliar with the building layout due to their short-term employment. The victims may have succumbed to toxic gas inhalation rather than burns, as the lithium battery materials are highly toxic and flammable. The South Korean government is implementing measures to prevent the spread of dangerous chemical substances and provide comprehensive assistance to the victims and their families.
