The South Korean Navy announced on June 19, 2024, that the first batch of 3 P-8A 'Poseidon' maritime patrol aircraft purchased from American Boeing Company has arrived at the Navy Aviation Command in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do. A 1-year evaluation test will follow, with plans for them to officially enter service by mid next year. These aircraft will enhance South Korea's anti-submarine warfare capabilities and surveillance capabilities concerning North Korea. The P-8A is one of the most widely used advanced maritime patrol aircraft globally, with a top speed of 907 km/h, far surpassing South Korea's current P-3 patrol aircraft.
