South Korea's National Intelligence Service issued a warning to South Korean citizens on June 27, 2024, advising those traveling to China for tourism, business, or study from July 1 to be cautious about using VPNs to access restricted social media platforms, as they may face scrutiny from Chinese law enforcement officers. The Chinese government has heightened its temporary search authority for electronic devices starting July 1, raising concerns for South Korean nationals using VPNs in China. The NIS urged citizens facing such inspections to seek assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Protection Hotline, the South Korean Embassy in China, or local consulates.
