South Korean Medical Reform Controversy Escalates, Medical Association Launches Nationwide Strike

Reported 11 months ago

On June 9, 2024, South Korea's largest physician lobbying group, the Korean Medical Association (KMA), announced that its members would launch a nationwide strike on June 18 to protest the government's plan to increase medical school student quotas. This marks the first full-scale strike with 74% of participating members approving the action. The strike is expected to disrupt medical services widely. The government's plan to increase student quotas by 1,509 people is the first in 27 years. The KMA argues that the plan will harm South Korea's healthcare system and exacerbate long-standing issues of staff shortages and inadequate compensation. South Korean Prime Minister urges dialogue to resolve the deadlock as tensions between the medical community and the government continue.
