South Police Chief Faces Pressure to Solve Case a Week Before Retirement

Reported about 1 year ago

Just a week before his retirement, as Lin Shijie, Chairman of the Fishermen's Association in the South District, is gunned down by a shooter at close range on July 8, 2024, South District Police Chief Liao Zongshan faces intense pressure to solve the case. Speculations arise about who will succeed as the next police chief in the district, with names like Inspector General of the Secretariat of the Police Administration Bureau Yan Wangsheng, Chief Secretary of the Police Administration Bureau Li Zhengxiao, Police Commissioner of the Police Administration Bureau Lin Guoqing, and Zhang Shude being considered. South Mayor Huang Weizhe emphasizes the importance of maintaining public safety and hopes the next police chief will seamlessly continue their work. Huang has met with Minister of the Interior Liu Shifang to discuss potential candidates. Liao, a graduate of Police University's 48th class, previously served as the captain of the old Tainan City Criminal Investigation Division and has a successful record dealing with crime cases, such as the 319 shooting. Although there is speculation about his successor, candidates like Li Zhengxiao and Zhang Shude may face challenges due to past controversies, while Lin Guoqing lacks criminal experience but has a good relationship with the current head of the police administration bureau, Chang Rongxing. Yan Wangsheng, despite having a criminal background and serving in various police positions, may not have as strong ties to Tainan. South Tainan's recent police chiefs have often been chosen with strong influence from the central government. Liao's decisive decision-making and focus on security have been well-received by the grassroots. The introduction of the new police chief is eagerly awaited by residents of South Tainan.
