Southwest Airlines has revised its unit revenue growth forecast downward due to declining discretionary spending and uncertainties in government travel funding, now projecting a 2% to 4% growth for the first quarter. In a significant policy change, the airline will begin charging for checked bags starting May 28, ending its long-standing practice of allowing two free bags, aiming to boost earnings amid pressure from investors. The new policy will still provide free baggage allowances to its most loyal customers and those purchasing premium fares.
