NASA announced on November 8, 2021, that they will grant 8.43 billion USD (approximately 274.6 billion TWD) to SpaceX to create a deorbit vehicle to push the International Space Station (ISS) into the atmosphere in 2023, preparing for its decommissioning. This task, originally Russia's responsibility, aims to avoid risks when the ISS re-enters Earth's atmosphere. The ISS, jointly run by the US and Russia for 24 years, is set to be decommissioned by 2030 due to aging equipment. NASA continues to support private companies like SpaceX in space station development amid competition with China's Tiangong station and the race back to the moon.
