Spirit Airlines, a pioneer in ultra low-cost air travel, filed for bankruptcy on November 18, 2024, after a series of quarterly losses, failed merger attempts with JetBlue Airways, and looming debt maturities. The airline, known for its budget-friendly services and bright yellow planes, has not turned a profit since 2019 and was hampered by unsuccessful merger negotiations, marking the first major U.S. airline to file for Chapter 11 since 2011.
