In April 2021, a bullying incident in a Chinese school in Shanghai resulted in one student severely injuring another during a physical altercation. When a bystander tried to intervene, the bully's parents argued that the bystander was responsible for the injuries. Despite the argument, a court ruled that the bully and their parents were to bear 70% of the responsibility, with the school taking 30% and compensating around 12,000 RMB, after deducting the medical expenses initially covered by the bully's parents.
