In an exclusive report on July 2, 2024, it was revealed that Taroko National Park, severely affected by the 0403 Hualien earthquake, suffered an estimated carbon sink loss of approximately 3,821 tons based on satellite imagery. Apart from repairing damaged public facilities in the park, efforts will be made to increase carbon sequestration in national parks and wetlands to offset the loss. The focus will be on restoring natural carbon sink functions through geologically assessing new landslide areas for suitable reforestation. National parks, wetlands, and coastlines are crucial areas for Taiwan's 2050 net zero transition, serving as vital blue carbon sources and restoration bases. Initiatives include comprehensive wetland carbon sink investigations and biodiversity-centric carbon accounting to develop strategies for carbon reduction and increased carbon sequestration.
