Streaming platforms depend on traditional TV series as the production of new scripted content decreases.

Reported 6 months ago

Streaming platforms are increasingly relying on old linear and broadcast TV shows like "Friends," "The Office," and "Grey's Anatomy" to attract and retain audiences, as new scripted content declines. As of Q1 2024, most SVOD platforms, except for Apple TV Plus and Netflix, generated over half of their catalog demand from shows originally released on linear TV. While scripted programming plays a smaller role in linear TV, older shows are over-performing relative to their supply percentage. This trend is affecting the industry as the number of scripted broadcast shows continues to decrease, with news and sports becoming key drivers of linear TV.
