On June 18, 2024, a report from the China Times shared that in the scorching summer heat, students find it hard to focus on studying in non-air-conditioned rooms. However, a university in Guangdong, mainland China, requires an additional payment of 24 RMB (about 107 NTD) for air conditioning per class, leading to student dissatisfaction. Although many argue that the school should not charge extra for air conditioning on top of tuition fees, the school staff defended this practice as necessary to offset the significant electricity cost. The 24 RMB fee is explained as a prepaid charge that will be refunded after calculating the actual usage, with the actual cost per class estimated at around 2.5 RMB (about 10.6 NTD) per student in smaller classrooms and up to 16 RMB (about 71.4 NTD) in larger lecture halls.
