A recent study published in the European Heart Journal by researchers at the Cleveland Clinic has found a link between the sugar substitute xylitol and a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular-related deaths. Xylitol, commonly used in sugar-free products and labeled as 'keto-friendly,' was shown to activate platelets, increasing the likelihood of blood clots, which are major causes of heart attacks and strokes. The study highlights the importance of limiting intake of artificial sweeteners and considering more natural sugars like those found in fruits and vegetables for healthier dietary choices.
