Study Reveals Weight Gain Effects of Common Antidepressants

Reported 12 months ago

A new study has found that some commonly prescribed antidepressants can lead to weight gain, with sertraline associated with an average gain of nearly 0.5 pounds at six months and 3.2 pounds at 24 months. Escitalopram and paroxetine were linked to a 15% and 14% increased risk, respectively, of gaining at least 5% of baseline weight at six months. The research, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, compared weight gain among over 183,000 people and emphasized the importance of discussing concerns about weight gain with a clinician when starting antidepressant treatment.
