In the Sudan Red case, involving the illegal import of chili powder containing Sudan Red by six companies including Kaohsiung Jin Zhan where Li Yanting is responsible, Li Yanting was accused of violating the Food Safety Law, fraud, and anti-money laundering. During the first court session, Li Yanting only admitted to part of the charges, such as false labeling, and even claimed that Wellcome had visited the factory before purchasing the products, indicating approval. The case caused a food safety crisis in Taiwan, with Li Yanting and other defendants denying fraud or violations of food safety laws. The defense lawyer Lin Shimeng used examples like a duck liver mixed as goose liver case to argue that the judge should follow the Supreme Court's intent. Another lawyer, Lin Kai, referred to Wellcome as an example, highlighting their certification process. The defense argued that even if Chinese products were considered inferior, the prosecutor should provide concrete evidence before invoking the food safety law.
