As of July 2, 2024, Sweden has expanded its parental leave benefits to include grandparents. Under the new policy, parents of newborns can transfer up to 45 days of parental leave to both sets of grandparents, or 90 days for single-parent families. Previously, parents could already enjoy 480 days of paid parental leave, with 390 days paid at around 80% of their original salary and the remaining 90 days receiving a daily subsidy of approximately 180 kronor (about 552 New Taiwan dollars). This new law allows grandparents to also benefit from these subsidies when caring for grandchildren, offering financial security and creating more caregiving opportunities in Sweden, a country known for its exemplary parenting welfare system.
