During the reconstruction after the 0206 Tainan earthquake back in February 6, 2016, two former village chiefs in Tainan, named Tsai and Liu, assisted in repairing the damage caused by the earthquake but were found guilty of accepting bribes totaling 3.1 million NT dollars and 1.14 million NT dollars from construction companies. Both were sentenced to 7 years and 6 months, and 8 years and 2 months in prison respectively for bribery. The Supreme Court recently rejected their appeal, confirming the verdict. The earthquake resulted in soil liquefaction causing several houses to sink in Tainan; hence, the city government initiated a subsidized project for raising and stabilizing sunken houses. Tsai and Liu, who were then village chiefs, were involved in this assistance project and were found guilty of accepting bribes from construction companies for every household in need of assistance.
