Taipei City Councilor Hsu Shu-hua stated on June 28 that the shortage of bus drivers has become a common occurrence, and only with a moderate salary increase can talents be retained. Taipei's city buses require 5,262 drivers, but by the end of May, only 3,698 drivers were available. The shortage of manpower has reached 30%, leading to overwork and absenteeism becoming normal. Hsu suggested that by giving salary raises to the current 3,698 bus drivers, even if each driver is given an extra NT$10,000 per month, it would only cost around NT$30 million annually, a fraction of the budget allocated for the free YouBike service, urging Mayor Chiang Wan-an to take action.
