Reported 11 months ago

A 68-year-old man surnamed Chen from Wanhua, Taipei, killed his 78-year-old landlord surnamed Yan with a knife due to an unpaid rent of 20,000 NT dollars, then turned himself in near the City God Temple in Hsinchu. Chen lived with Yan, who was visually impaired, for over two years, and their relationship deteriorated recently due to rent arrears. Chen attacked Yan after an argument over rent escalated, resulting in Yan's death. Chen then fled back to his hometown in Hsinchu but later surrendered to the police. Following investigation, Chen was arrested and charged with murder by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office, citing a risk of flight, and was granted detention. The incident shocked those who knew Yan, who was described as a kind person participating in community activities and caring for fellow residents in the rented house.
