On July 6, 2024, amid allegations of involvement in a land development corruption case, Taipei Mayor Cheng Wen-tsang was brought in for questioning upon returning to Taiwan and was subsequently charged with corruption. After a 16-hour interrogation, the court decided to grant bail amounting to 5 million NTD, with restrictions on his movements and contact with other related individuals. The court found difficulties in determining certain aspects of the money laundering accusations against Cheng, leading to the rejection of the detention request. Despite denying the allegations of bribery and leakage of information, Cheng was granted bail while his co-defendants were kept in custody. The court highlighted that until proven guilty, individuals should be considered innocent.
