Taipei Metro Controversy Over Courtesy Seats Resurfaces! Ministry of Health and Welfare to Revise Regulations; Victim: Age Should Not Dictate Morality

Reported 10 months ago

Another dispute over courtesy seats on the Taipei Metro has erupted, with altercations breaking out on trains. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has announced plans to soon propose amendments to the Disability Rights Protection Law to broaden priority seating criteria. The Taipei Metro welcomes the central government's attention and legislative amendments, while urging passengers to show empathy and not let minor incidents overshadow the majority's goodwill. The purpose and principles of courtesy seats do not solely hinge on age but include individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, those with limited mobility, carrying infants, feeling unwell, elderly, or others with genuine needs. The company also introduced stickers and badges for identifying these groups and providing them for free since September 2007. They emphasize that courtesy seats should not become tools for age or moral judgments, and the original intention behind their legislation should not be lost.
