From January to April this year, Taipei residents have been discarding an average of 6,587 used mattresses per month, an increase of 1,000 units from the previous year. The intricate process of manually disassembling pocket spring mattresses has overwhelmed cleaning crews in various districts. Due to a halt in mattress collection services, some residents have been waiting for up to 5 months with no one coming to pick them up. The Environmental Protection Bureau has initiated the sale of mattress shredding machinery, which is expected to start operations in late June to address the backlog of discarded mattresses.
