A 70-year-old woman in New Taipei City fell victim to a scam where she invested 1.2 million NT in a fake advertisement offering low-priced purchase of TSMC stock. She believed she had earned over 3 million NT but was asked to pay a high handling fee when trying to withdraw her profits, leading her to realize the fraud. A 19-year-old driver named Zhang was arrested during a meetup between the two parties, breaking into tears despite claiming innocence in seeking a job on Facebook. The police uncovered forged documents and phones on the scene and Zhang was charged with fraud and money laundering. The scam exploited the AI trend and rising stock prices of TSMC, deceiving the elderly woman who sought assistance from the police.
