Taiwan Coast Guard Confronts Chinese Maritime Surveillance with 3 Against 7, Taiwanese Fishing Vessel Taken to Fujian Weitou by Force

Reported 12 months ago

On the evening of July 2, 2024, the Taiwanese fishing vessel Da Ji Man 88 was operating off the coast of Kinmen when it was approached and inspected by Chinese maritime surveillance ships. The Taiwan Coast Guard responded by dispatching two ships initially, but with the presence of seven Chinese vessels, an additional search and rescue ship was sent. The fishing vessel was seized by Chinese authorities for crossing into Chinese waters during the fishing moratorium period. Despite efforts to request the release of the vessel via broadcast, to avoid escalation, the pursuit was stopped. The vessel was confirmed to have been taken to Weitou Port in northeastern Kinmen by eight Chinese maritime surveillance ships, with considerations that the Taiwanese fishermen were in violation first due to cross-border fishing during the off-season.
