On July 3, 2024, at 5:53 am, a Taiwanese fishing boat, Da Jin Man 88, from Penghu was intercepted by Chinese maritime police in the waters outside Shanghai, and forcibly taken to Weitou Port in Fujian. The Taiwanese Coast Guard held a press conference to explain the confrontation with the Chinese maritime police ships. The Coast Guard patrol boats managed to drive away the Chinese ships. The incident occurred beyond Taiwan's restricted waters, where the Coast Guard doesn't routinely patrol, placing them at a disadvantage during the standoff. The Chinese maritime police deployed larger vessels compared to the smaller Taiwanese patrol boats, creating challenges in the rescue operation as the fishing boat entered Chinese waters.
