During the 100th anniversary celebration of the founding of the army by the Huangpu Military Academy in Taiwan on June 16, Defense Minister Gu Li-xiong responded to President Lai Ching-te's remarks criticizing the concept of 'first battle, last battle' as surrenderism, emphasizing Taiwan's goal to enhance self-defense capabilities and gradually counter Chinese threats without seeking war. He clarified that Taiwan has never sought war, aiming to weaken China's invasion of Taiwan. Gu's comments were in response to accusations by the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation that Lai Ching-te was leaning towards war despite the need for a president who seeks peace and not war.
