Taiwan EMU 3000 Express Train Collides with Debris Flow, Driver Suffers Hand Fracture, 6 Passengers Lightly Injured

Reported 8 months ago

On June 21, 2024, at 9:41 am, reporter Ni Youchun stated that Taiwan Railways Train No. 229, EMU 3000 series New Express Train, collided with debris flow at the south end of Hualien's Qingshui Tunnel in the afternoon, causing the train to be stuck in the tunnel and the second car to derail. The driver suffered a hand fracture, and 6 passengers were lightly injured. Due to the debris flow occurring on the westbound line while the warning system was installed on the eastbound line, it couldn't prevent the incident. Taiwan Railways established a Level 1 response team, an Eastern Region response team, and an on-site command post. Measures are being taken to enhance slope monitoring with advanced technology for better early warning and response capabilities.
