The Taoyuan Environmental Protection Bureau fined CPC Corporation, Taiwan 100,000 NTD in March for pollution at the CPC Taoyuan Refinery, after confirming contamination in three land areas and demanding CPC to provide an improvement plan. The pollution was discovered during self-inspections by CPC in 2020, as part of plans to lease some refinery areas to another company for a power project. The contaminated land, totaling 55,291 square meters, showed excessive levels of heavy metals zinc, nickel, and arsenic, along with elevated levels of total petroleum hydrocarbons, with the highest concentrations far beyond standard limits. The EPA attributed the pollution to CPC's activities and past land usage as a disposal site, imposing the fine and ordering remediation by October next year.
