Taiwan Fishing Boat Detained by Chinese Coast Guard, Taiwan Fisheries Agency Urges Immediate Release of Crew and Vessel

Reported about 1 year ago

On July 3, 2024, according to Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration, the fishing boat 'Da Jin Man 88' was indeed in Chinese waters, beyond the range of the Coast Guard's radar detection and not in an area where they regularly enforce fishing regulations or protect fishing grounds. The boat had a total of 5 crew members, including 2 Taiwanese and 3 Indonesians. The Director of the Fisheries Agency, Zhang Zhi-sheng, emphasized that the area where the incident occurred is usually a common operational area for fishermen from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, not just for this one Taiwanese fishing boat. Taiwan has urged China through the Coast Guard to promptly release the crew and vessel, explaining the reasons for the forced inspection. Zhang stated that the government will negotiate with China through the Mainland Affairs Council via cross-strait channels. He also advised Taiwanese fishermen to avoid operating in Chinese waters during the off-season to prevent similar incidents from happening. This incident highlights the need for continued communication and coordination between both sides of the Taiwan Strait regarding maritime law enforcement and fishing operations to safeguard the rights of fishermen.
