An 18-year-old male high school student in Taoyuan's Xinwu District, Taiwan, sent over 800 phishing texts in January, leading to others falling victim to fraudsters obtaining personal information and credit card numbers. After an investigation by the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office and Yangmei Police, it was discovered that the student himself was also a victim. The student had unknowingly downloaded an app after participating in an online lucky draw in January, which automatically sent out phishing texts leading to him being involved in a fraud case. The police urge caution and to verify SMS content to prevent falling prey to scams.
