Taiwan Legislative Yuan Passes Initial Review of Amending National Sports Law to Provide Insurance Coverage for Disabled and Injured Athletes

Reported 11 months ago

In the Legislative Yuan Education and Culture Committee meeting on June 24, 2024, discussions were held on amending the National Sports Act. The proposed amendments aim to improve insufficient protection for disabled athletes, including students, athletes, and national team representatives. The amendments suggest providing compensation, insurance coverage, and medical care for injured athletes, addressing issues raised during the Asia Cup qualifiers where the Taiwan team faced inadequate insurance coverage. Various amendments were proposed, such as promoting gender equality in sports participation and mandating 'group injury insurance' for students participating in sports events. The amendments also emphasize providing support for athletes' medical care, rehabilitation, and employment after severe injuries during training or competitions. The committee also passed resolutions urging the government to initiate policy insurance for sports events organized by the Ministry of Education within a year.
