Taiwan LGBTQ: Breaking the Ice with LGBTQ Political Figures, but Their Fight Is Not Over Yet

Reported 11 months ago

In January, 31-year-old Huang Jie won a legislative seat in Taiwan's election, becoming Taiwan's first openly homosexual legislator. Taiwan is one of the most progressive places in Asia for LGBTQ rights, legalizing same-sex marriage in 2019 and allowing same-sex couples to adopt. Despite progress, there are still challenges for LGBTQ politicians like Huang and Taipei City Councilor Miao Boya, who face obstacles and stereotypes in their political careers. While Taiwan's government is advancing LGBTQ rights, society still struggles with acceptance, as shown by recent conservative backlash during elections.
