Former Mayor of Taoyuan and Chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation, Cheng Wen-tsang, was detained for alleged corruption and ordered to post bail of NT$5 million earlier today. Following a court ruling early this morning, Cheng was detained and denied visitation rights. However, the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office immediately filed an appeal against the court's decision to grant bail, citing improper handling of the case. Cheng denied the charges and engaged in intense legal battles in court, leading the judge to grant bail of NT$5 million while imposing restrictions on residence, travel, and overseas trips. The case involves suspicions of bribe-taking related to official duties. The Prosecutors Office affirmed the gravity of the criminal allegations by detaining Cheng for further investigation.
