Reported 11 months ago

Regarding a Chinese man driving a speedboat into Taipei Harbor to 'seek freedom,' Taiwanese Minister of National Defense Gu Liuxiong stated on June 11 that the incident may not be ruled out as a deliberate 'grey zone harassment' by China against Taiwan's maritime defenses. The Coast Guard Administration admitted negligence in law enforcement, resulting in disciplinary actions against 10 individuals, including the northern branch chief and radar operator. The Chinese national, a former PLA Navy captain identified by the surname Ruan, piloted a 9-meter speedboat from Fujian, China, into Taipei Harbor, sparking high alert in Taiwan's defense. Minister Gu emphasized the need to raise vigilance and enhance frontline maritime defense with Coast Guard support. The incident prompted discussions on improving Coast Guard equipment and training.
