Taiwan News Association Questions Cooperation between Blue and White on Amendment to Broadcasting Law, People Party Refutes: Not in Support of Indefinitely Extending Licenses

Reported 8 months ago

The Taiwan News Association issued a statement and appeal, alleging that the Kuomintang and People Party's joint amendment of the Satellite Broadcasting and Television Law includes a 'retrospective clause' allowing previously taken-down TV stations to operate until an administrative lawsuit judgment is final. In response, the People Party caucus clarified that the cooperative promotion of the law amendment by blue and white is not true, emphasizing that the amendment should not apply retroactively and should not cater to specific cases. They oppose extending license terms indefinitely as it could eliminate the mechanism for eliminating low-quality media, thus not supporting proposals containing such clauses. The caucus calls for transparency through disclosures on ownership, procurement, subsidies, and advertising income to enhance public information transparency and ensure journalistic independence.
