Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs, Guo Zhizhui, announced plans to introduce foreign workers to deal with the labor shortage in Taiwan Power Company (Taipower)'s frontline maintenance crew. However, the issue raised concerns among Taipower's union members regarding potential language barriers and safety risks. While the proposal initially caused confusion, it was clarified that the plan is for Taipower's subcontractors, not the company itself, to hire foreign workers. The aging workforce in subcontractor companies and the increasing incidents of power outages have prompted the need for additional workers, estimated to be around 1,000 to 2,000 people. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Taipower are in the process of discussing this plan further with the Ministry of Labor to address the labor shortage in the energy industry.
