Taiwan Power Company: Mai-Liao Unit 1 Can Operate Legally Without Exceeding Shortfall

Reported about 1 year ago

Various environmental groups recently gathered at Yunlin County Government to demand the refusal of permit for Mai-Liao Power Plant, while opposition party legislators questioned the legality of extending the contract of Unit 1 at Mai-Liao Coal-Fired Power Plant. Taiwan Power Company clarified that according to air pollution regulations, Mai-Liao Unit 1 can operate legally during the permit extension review period, with the contract being legally valid, without any violation. If the unit fails to obtain, renew, or extend the operating permit in the future, Taiwan Power would terminate the contract, emphasizing that there is no signing of illegal contracts. The unit was scheduled to be decommissioned by the end of May but has failed to generate the required electricity. Taiwan Power intends to grant an extension until 2025, causing protests from locals and environmental groups.
