Taiwan President Calls for Constitutional Interpretation on Controversial Parliament Reform Bill

Reported 8 months ago

Taiwan has been embroiled in debates and societal divisions in recent weeks over the 'Parliament Reform Bill'. President Lai Ching-te announced during his first open dialogue session since taking office that he has signed into law the 'Legislative Yuan Powers Exercise Act' and an amendment to the 'Republic of China Criminal Code' passed by the Legislative Yuan. However, he expressed plans to request a constitutional interpretation and temporary injunction from the Constitutional Court to confirm the constitutionality and legitimacy of the bill, citing concerns over its impact on constitutional principles of separation of powers and checks and balances. The bill, proposed jointly by the opposition Kuomintang and New Power Party, has stirred heated debates over issues like presidential reports, contempt of parliament, personnel approval rights, and investigative powers. Supporters argue that the bill enhances parliamentary oversight over the government, while opponents fear it may lead to parliament overreach.
