Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen Comments on Corruption Suspicions Involving Eric Chu

Reported about 1 year ago

On July 6, 2024, Eric Chu, Chairman of the Strait Exchange Foundation, was suspected of corruption and bribery while in office, leading to a court application for detention and restriction of meetings by the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office, eventually granting bail of NT$5 million. President Tsai Ing-wen emphasized zero tolerance for illegality, stating that law enforcement should investigate without bias. The government expressed respect for the ongoing judicial investigation, aiming for swift clarification of the facts. Eric Chu denied any wrongdoing through his lawyer and expressed cooperation with the investigation. The case is related to the expansion of the Lin-kou Industrial Zone during Chu's tenure as Mayor of Taoyuan City and is still under review by the Ministry of the Interior. This development has caused a stir in political circles and within the Democratic Progressive Party as Chu, known for his pro-China stance, has held various significant government positions, with his recent appointment as Chairman of the Strait Exchange Foundation seen as a goodwill gesture towards cross-strait relations.
